“Poggio Cagnano rises at 500m and dominates the area with a view that goes from the monte Amiata to the Argentario sea. The two hectares of vines, surrounded by olive trees and oak forests, lie with an ideal orientation on a compact block of Arenaria.

High Altitude Viticulture
Altitude means freshness. The average temperatures are lower, alcohol decreases and acids rise resulting in finer wines with elegant bouquet. The temperature variations are typical of the mountain climate and contribute to the development in the grapes of the precursors that will translate during the fermentation into the finest aromas. Phenolic ripening develops until mid-October. The skin thickens and brings large quantities of tannins and anthocyanins to the wine increasing its intensity and aging capacity.

Soil
Arenaria is sandstone: a poor soil, well drained with a strong minerality. Hard to work but ideal for wine-growing as it limits the number of grapes produced while increasing the quality.

Local varieties
We mainly grow Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Vermentino and Ansonica typical of our territory, with some small portions of international grapes like Cabernet, Merlot and Grenache that found here in Maremma a natural habitat.”
